Workshop: Opioids and the Workplace

From 1999-2016, more than 350,000 people died from an overdose involving prescription and illegal opioids. On average, 115 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. Overdoses involving opioids killed about 48,000 people in 2017. Approximately 40% of those deaths were from prescription opioids. This national opioid epidemic is impacting communities and worksites throughout the country. In this workshop participants will learn facts about the crisis, the impact of prescription and illegal opioids, the connection between hazardous jobs, workplace injury, and opioid misuse, overdose, and addic tion, jobs that may have occupational exposure, worker protection guidelines, and non-punitive strategies for helping addicted workers.
