The New York Nail Salon Worker School was established by NYCOSH in 2016 to ensure that workers in New York can be trained to obtain licenses, build leadership in the workplace, and organize to create safe and healthy workplaces where their rights are respected.
NYCOSH’s Nail Specialty Trainee Course
NYCOSH offers an extensive training course to support nail salon workers on the road to obtain a permanent nail specialty license in New York State, as allowed by legislative reforms enacted in 2015. Nail salon workers who have their Nail Specialty Trainee License can take this course in order to fulfill the state’s 26 hour training requirement.
Class Schedule
The course is held on six consecutive weeks on a Monday or Tuesday track. Weeks 1-5, class is held from 9:30am to 5:30pm; the final day (during week 6) will consist of a review session and a 2 hour final exam.
Class Topics & Methods
The course and in-class exam cover all topics required by the state, including:
- Workplace safety and health
- Infection control
- Bacteria and infectious disorders and diseases
- Anatomy and physiology of the nail
- Client consultation and service protocols.
Course instructors use participatory training methods which involve workers in active learning and discussion, use hands-on exercises, and also build worker confidence and leadership.
